The Basic Terms in Blackjack
Since blackjack is one of the popular games in a casino, a player who wants to play should not just know the rules but also the basic terms being used in the game. Here are the most important terms in blackjack.
A new blackjack player should be familiar with the values of the cards being used. In blackjack, it is possible that the dealer may use up to eight decks. The suits of the cards don't make a difference when playing blackjack. A heart, a spade, a diamond or a club has the same value.
For cards from two to nine, their values are the numbers indicated on the cards. For the cards ten, jack, queen and king, their values are all ten.
The ace has a value of one or eleven depending on the other cards on your hand. The value of the ace is determined based on what value (whether one or eleven) will make the sum of the cards closer to 21 or prevent a bust.
A soft hand means having an ace with a value of eleven. A hard hand is when the ace is given the value of one.
The blackjack or the natural is the highest hand in this game. A blackjack occurs when the first two cards dealt make a sum of 21. To have a blackjack, one of the cards should have a value of ten (a ten, a jack, a queen or a king) and the other card should be an ace (which will be given a value of eleven).
To "hit" means to continue drawing cards until you decide to keep the current hand or until the sum of the hand reaches 21.
To "stand" means to keep the current hand even if the sum is not 21. Many players decide to stand especially when they calculate that they might get a card which will make the total higher than 21. That will give them a losing hand.
To "bust" means to get a total that is higher than 21. When a player "busts," the blackjack dealer automatically wins, unless the blackjack dealer also "busts."
A "push" means having the same total as the blackjack dealer. When a push happens, nobody wins and the dealer just leaves your bet on the table.
