Blackjack Hands Slang
Blackjack's a card game where a player's chances of winning depend largely on one's logic. The object of the game is to beat the dealer's accumulated total without going over 21. It's interesting to know that there are a lot of blackjack hands slang used in this game given the fact that you're just starting with a pair of cards.
The ultimate hand is called a blackjack or a natural, that's when the first two cards equal 21. That first pair has a combination of any face card (king, queen, or jack) or a ten and an ace. The ace in this case is played as an 11. If you get a blackjack, you automatically win unless the dealer has gets a 21 too. If that's the case, you and the dealer tie and nobody gets paid any winnings and you only keep your bet.
As mentioned earlier, the ace card is fairly flexible. It can be played either as a one or an 11. If you have no aces or have an ace and it's played as a one card, it's said that you have a hard hand. In contrast, if you have an ace and use it as an 11, you've got yourself a soft hand.
A pat is a hand that adds up to 17 or more, but doesn't bust or it's less than 21. This is also called a standing hand because it's pretty safe to stand or to stay with it rather than risking a break when you ask for a hit. A stiff hand has less chances of winning and it's usually a hard 12 to 16. There's a greater risk of a bust when you ask for a hit with a stiff.
When your cards exceed 21, it's called a break or a bust. You automatically lose with this hand. So be careful and know when to stand when asking for a hit in hopes that they'll add up to 21. But when the dealer busts, everybody else automatically wins.
Blackjack hands could either be hard, soft, pat, stiff, bust or natural. When games are played with more than just a single deck of cards, it only warrants a better appreciation of the complexity of a card combo. So whether you're playing with a hard or soft hand, use caution when asking for a hit. And remember, hope for a blackjack or a natural, keep away from a bust, stand with a pat, and be careful with a stiff.
